NABPR Announces Scholarship Recipient Ashlyn Wimberly

NABPR recognizes Ashlyn Wimberly, a Baylor doctoral candidate whose research explores pain, embodiment, eschatology, and disability theology in Luke.

Ashlyn Wimberly is a doctoral candidate in New Testament at Baylor University. She completed her Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School and her B.A. in Christian Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Her research interests include disability studies, embodiment, and eschatology in the Gospels.

Her dissertation explores the presentation of pain in the Gospel of Luke and its potential eschatological implications. Following the Lukan emphasis on healing narratives as key moments in initiating the Kingdom of God, the dissertation analyzes the Gospel of Luke through Greek medicine’s perspective of pain as a symptom. The project also explores what that eschatological vision of pain-removal can mean for questions of disability theology.

In the coming year, Ashlyn will continue writing her dissertation and enjoying her time in Waco, while also working on several other in-progress writing and research projects. She looks forward to furthering her teaching experience and presenting at the annual SBL meeting.
